FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How long will the CLVP appointment take?
It generally takes up to two hours to be assessed by all the members of the CLVP team. There is a brief intake meeting at the start of your appointment to meet with families and team to clarify any questions, gather information and discuss any concerns.  We will explain how the clinic will work, and then the whole CLVP team will meet with the student and their team at the end of your son/daughter's appointment for a "wrap-up" session to discuss their recommendations.
There will be some snacks available, however, families are responsible for their own lunches.

Q:  Is there a waitlist to attend a CLVP clinic?
All requests for CLVP clinic spots that are approved after the CLVP Referral / Screening form has been filled out, are put on a waitlist for the next clinic in that students home area. We generally see 8-10 students per clinic day.

Q:   My son/daughter received some optical devices at a previous CLVP clinic.  Should we bring these with to our clinic appointment?
Yes, please. These devices may be exchanged or replaced if necessary at the clinic.

Q:   My son/daughter has prescriptive glasses.  Should we bring them to our clinic appointment?
Yes, please. Whether your child wears glasses occasionally or all the time, it is beneficial for our Optometrist to have their current prescription glasses on hand at the clinic.

Q:  Should we arrive earlier than our set appointment time?
Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

Q:   As a parent/caregiver, do we need to stay with our son/daughter for the duration of the clinic appointment?
Yes, the parent is an integral part of the clinic process and is expected to be there for the entire appointment.

Q:  Does my child's Vision Teacher need to attend the clinic appointment?
Yes, the Vision Teacher is an integral part of the clinic process and is expected to be there for the entire appointment.

Q:  Will I receive a report after attending the CLVP clinic?
Yes, you will receive a report within a few weeks of attending a clinic. This report outlines the results of all the assessments, adaptations, and educational strategies that can be incorporated into the student's school program, as well as the recommendations from the members of the CLVP team. You will be asked at the intake meeting who you would like copies of the report sent to (ie: school, family physician, support worker, etc).

Q:  Do we need to pay a fee for my son/daughter to attend a CLVP clinic or pay for the optical devices that are dispensed?
There is no fee for attending one of the CLVP clinics, nor is there a charge for any of the optical devices provided for your child.
Each child, however, needs to have a valid BC Care Card to be seen at clinic.

Q:   My son/daughter no longer uses some of the optical devices that were provided for them at a previous clinic. What do we do with them?
Due to changes in their eye condition or changes of school, the devices dispensed to your child may no longer be appropriate.
Please return these to CLVP.

Q:   My son/daughters optical devices have been lost/stolen or have broken. What do we do in this situation?
CLVP will replace any defective equipment but if devices are lost or stolen, please have the vision teacher of the student contact us, and depending on the circumstances, we might be able to justify replacement.

Q:  How do I disinfect my Eschenbach products?

Eschenbach recommends using Clorox® Bleach-Free Disinfecting Wipes or Lysol® Disinfecting wipes to clean and disinfect its magnifying products. This includes disinfection from various viruses including the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) which causes COVID-19. Clorox® Bleach-Free Disinfecting Wipes and Lysol® Disinfecting wipes are on the United States EPA list of approved disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2  and have also proven to be safe for use with our products and will not damage or erode the coatings or lens material components. Although there are other disinfectants available, the Clorox® Bleach-Free disinfecting wipes and Lysol® Disinfecting wipes are the only ones that have been tested on our products to date and remain the only approved disinfectant product for use at this time.
To use the Clorox® Bleach-Free wipes and Lysol® Disinfecting wipes safely on our products, simply wipe the product off with the disinfectant wipe and then leave it for 10 minutes before reusing.  If after 10 minutes moisture remains on the lens, we suggest using a microfiber cloth to dry the lens.
For certain absorptive filters and readers made by Foster Grant® including the Solar Shield®, SolarComfort® and Haven® filters and the Private Eyes, Polinelli®, Microvision and LightSpecs® readers, Foster Grant recommends using soap and water. Caution must be taken with the LightSpecs® so as not to get water near the battery compartments on the temples.

'Q:  What is a 'Functional Vision Assessment"?
A Functional Vision Assessment (FVA) is an assessment that is done in order to gain a better understanding of how the student uses their vision in their everyday life.  While an ophthalmological assessment is important in order to determine how the student sees in optimal circumstances, the 'FVA' will help to determine how the student sees in varying environments, where lighting, glare, fatigue, and/or time of day could all be factors that affect vision.  The 'FVA' includes formal and informal testing in the following areas:  visual acuity (near and distance), visual field, contrast sensitivity, color vision, light sensitivity & optimal lighting conditions, and depth perception.  Based on this assessment, the teacher for the visually impaired can suggest modifications to the student's environment, instructional strategies and/or adaptions of the student's learning materials.

Q:  What is an 'Orientation and Mobility Assessment'?
Orientation and Mobility provides students who are visually impaired with the skills needed for safe, efficient, and independent travel in environments that are appropriate to their age and requirements.  An Orientation and Mobility assessment reviews the personal mobility needs of the student and the use of their vision within functional settings both indoors and outdoors.  Low vision aids for distance viewing may also be assessed to determine the student's access to visual information and to provide strategies in the use of these devices.

Q:  What is 'Access Technology'?
Access technology can have a profound effect in terms of providing access to information for students who are visually impaired.
Clinic staff provide a comprehensive look at what the student is currently using and what might be appropriate for future use, whether it is a hardware solution such as a CCTV, a piece of screen enlargement software or a recommendation for a learning resource, such as a title from the Digital Repository.  Clinic staff are happy to entertain questions from school staff about the use of any type of technology, be it specialized or mainstream.
